SAT Prep is an important topic, but you do not need to approach it with fear. Each Saturday, two questions will be posted similar to the type you will find on the mathematics sections of an SAT test.* The following week, I will provide the answer along with two new questions. These questions are good practice for the PSAT or the ACT as well.
* I am creating these myself, based on available SAT test materials (so that I do not infringe on copyright laws).
SAT Question 3. (Algebra)

A wholesale food vendor charges $23 for each case of mustard and $27 for each case of ketchup. If a diner buys 15 cases of condiments, of which x cases are ketchup and the rest are mustard. Which of the following equations represents the total cost in dollars, d?
- d = 50x + 15
- d = 15x + 23
- d = 4x + 345
- d = 50x
SAT Question 4. (Geometry)

What is the radius of the circle given by the equation x2 + 6x + y2 – 8y = 11?
- 3
- 4
- 6
- 11
Answers to last week’s questions:

SAT Question 1. (Algebra 1)
The function f(x) is defined as f(x) = 3g(x), where g(x) = x + 2. What is the value of f(5)?
Answer for Question 1: f(5) = 21.
This is a question about composite functions. First, we’re going to build the generic of the composite function to determine f(x).
f(x) = 3g(x)
= 3(x + 2)
= 3x + 6
Now substitute x = 5
f(5) = 3(5) + 6
= 15 + 6
= 21
SAT Question 2. (Math)
Maria has an average of 81 in her English class after taking 6 quizzes. If her lowest score is removed, her average rises to 85. What was her lowest score?
- 66 points
- 61 points
- 75 points
- 81 points
Answer for Question 2: 61 points
Right now, Maria has 6 ∙ 81 = 486 points in her English class. If the quiz with the lowest score is marked with the variable x, then (486 – x) / 5 would give us the new average of 85.
(486 – x) / 5 = 85
486 – x = 425 Multiplied both sides by 5.
– x = – 61 Subtract 486 from both sides.
x = 61 points Multiply both sides by – 1.
The answer is B. 61 points.

Remember, the answers for this week’s questions will be posted next Saturday along with an explanation of how we get to those answers.
