This week, we are tackling a classic problem-solving riddle that challenges students to think outside the box. Physics and logic puzzles like this are exceptional for developing lateral thinking and variable elimination. Instead of relying on pen and paper to plug numbers into a standard equation, students must physically visualize constraints and use the process of elimination. This type of abstract reasoning is foundational for building strong geometry skills, mechanical aptitude, and scientific problem-solving methods. The Week 3 Puzzle: The Counterfeit Coin

You are working inside a secure vault and have 8 heavy, identical-looking gold coins. However, you receive an insider tip that one of the coins is a counterfeit. It looks completely identical to the others, but it is slightly lighter in weight than the 7 genuine coins. You are given a classic two-pan balance scale. You cannot use any other measuring tools (like a digital scale), and you can only place coins on the pans to compare their weights against each other.

The Question:

Using the balance scale exactly twice, how can you guarantee finding the one lighter counterfeit coin?

Resist the temptation to split the 8 coins into two equal groups of 4! Think about what happens if you divide the coins into three groups instead (3, 3, and 2).

🏆 The Winning Strategy: Divide into Three Groups (3, 3, and 2)

You can reliably find the counterfeit coin in just 2 weighings by splitting the 8 coins into three distinct piles: Group A (3 coins), Group B (3 coins), and Group C (2 coins).

Step-by-Step Breakdown:

⚖️ Weighing #1: Place 3 coins on the Left Pan and 3 coins on the Right Pan (Leave 2 off)

  • Outcome 1: The scale BALANCES.
    • This proves all 6 coins on the scale are 100% genuine!
    • Therefore, the fake, lighter coin must be inside the pile of 2 coins you left off to the side.
  • Outcome 2: The scale TIPPLES (does not balance).
    • The side that goes UP is the lighter side, meaning the counterfeit coin is guaranteed to be one of the 3 coins on that higher pan.

⚖️ Weighing #2: Isolate the Single Counterfeit

Now you have narrowed the fake coin down to a small group of either 2 coins or 3 coins:

  • If you are testing the group of 2 coins (Outcome 1):
    • Place 1 coin on each side of the balance scale.
    • The side that rises UP is your counterfeit coin!
  • If you are testing the group of 3 coins (Outcome 2):
    • Pick any 2 coins from the group and place 1 on the left pan and 1 on the right pan (leaving the 3rd coin on the table).
    • If the scale balances: The counterfeit coin is the 3rd coin sitting on the table!
    • If the scale tipples: The coin on the higher side is the counterfeit!
