Long division is one of the biggest milestones in upper elementary math. However, once students learn the algorithm, they often run into a new hurdle when solving word problems: What do you actually DO with the remainder?

Depending on the real-world scenario, a remainder might mean you need to:
  • Round up (e.g., booking enough school buses so no child gets left behind).
 
  • Drop the leftover (e.g., counting how many full products you can make).
 
  • Focus solely on the remainder (e.g., finding out how many items are left over).

💡 The 3 Ways to Handle a Remainder in Word Problems

When your student finishes their long division and has a remainder left over, teach them to ask: “What is the question asking me to do with the leftover part?”
  1. Round UP (Add 1 to the Quotient): Used when everything or everyone must be included (buses, shipping boxes, hotel rooms).
    • Example: . You can’t leave kids behind, so you need  buses!
  2. Drop it (Keep Only the Whole Number): Used when you can only use or sell complete items (bracelets, packages, crafts).
    • Example: . You can only make full bracelets; the extra  beads aren’t enough for another one.
  3. Use the Remainder Itself: Used when the question specifically asks for the “leftovers” or extra pieces.
    • Example: . The final incomplete box will hold slices.
