Why do students often freeze when they see fractions with different numbers, even when they represent the exact same amount? Understanding equivalent fractions is one of the most critical foundational stepping stones in elementary mathematics, serving as the bridge to adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions down the road.

Instead of assigning standard textbook drill pages, what if your students had to decode an ancient maze to escape a fortress?

In this post, we’re sharing a game-changing strategy for teaching equivalent fractions, along with a free downloadable Escape Room activity sheet complete with full answer keys!

🔑 The “Golden Rule” of Equivalent Fractions

The secret to mastering equivalent fractions comes down to one simple concept: Whatever you do to the top (numerator), you must also do to the bottom (denominator).

  • Multiplying to Expand:

If you multiply the numerator by 3, you must multiply the denominator by 3. For example:

  • Dividing to Simplify:

If you divide the numerator by 5, you must divide the denominator by 5. For example:

10/25 divided by 5/5 = 2/5 ten twenty-fifths divided by five fifths equals two fifths.

💡 Visual Tip for Tutors & Parents:

Remind students that multiplying or dividing by a fraction like  or  is really just multiplying or dividing by 1! The numerical appearance changes, but the core value stays identical.

Division rule of 1. Any number divided by itself is equal to 1. That means for fractions x/x = 1
