S.A.T. SATURDAY WEEK 6

SAT Math Prep is an important topic, but you do not need to approach it with fear. Each Saturday, two questions will be posted similar to the type you will find on the mathematics sections of an SAT test.* The following week, I will provide the answer along with two new questions. These questions are good practice for the PSAT or the ACT as well.
* I am creating these myself, based on available SAT test materials (so that I do not infringe on copyright laws).
WEEK 6
This week, question 11 is based on trigonometry and question 12 is from Algebra 2. Our solutions are for question 9 and 10; both are from Geometry skills.
SAT Question 11. Trigonometry

In right triangle FGH, provided, sin x = 2/3. What is the length of FG in simplest form?

SAT Question 12. Algebra 2
f(x) is defined by f(x) = x(x + 1)(x2 – 4). How many different x-intercepts does the graph have?

SAT Question 9 Solution Geometry – Volume of a Cylinder

Florida Sunshine in a Bottle is creating shelf-stable orange juice cans. They want the cans to be 12 cm tall and hold 360 cm3 of juice. What is the approximate radius of their new canned product?
- 0 cm
- 1 cm
- 3 cm
- 5 cm
You’ll need to use the Formulas for Area of a Circle – because this is the base of the can – and Volume of a Cylinder. Both are provided at the beginning of the test.
Area of a Circle A = πr2
Volume of a Cylinder V = bh
360 = b(12) Substitute the given information and solve for b – the area of the circular base.
30 = b
The base is the area of the circle, πr2
30 = (πr2) Substitute 30 in the Area of a circle formula and solve for r, the radius.
r2 = 30/π ≈ 9.549296585…
r ≈ 3.09019… inches Option B
SAT Question 10 Solution Geometry – Pythagorean Theorem
Due to weather, a ship’s captain decides that it is safer to complete the trip from one port to another in two legs. He will pilot the ship due north for 600 knots before turning to go due east. If the direct route is 1800 knots, How many miles due east will the captain need to go? (Round your answer to the nearest tenth).
First draw a picture for the question.
Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the distance to be traveled East.
e2 + (600)2 = 18002
e2 + 360,000 = 3,240,000
e2 = 2,880,000
e = 1,697.05627…
e ≈ 1,697.1 knots
