SAT Prep is an important topic, but you do not need to approach it with fear. Each Saturday, two questions will be posted similar to the type you will find on the mathematics sections of an SAT test.* The following week, I will provide the answer along with two new questions. These questions are good practice for the PSAT or the ACT as well.

* I am creating these myself, based on available SAT test materials (so that I do not infringe on copyright laws).

SAT Question 7.

Exterior of a clinic building.

The new clinic on Main Street needs to hire office staff. They are going to hire at least 7 people and have a total budget of $10,000 per week. The window clerks will earn $1,020 per week, and the nurse techs will earn $1,300 per week. Which of these inequalities represents this situation, where x is the number of clerks and y is the number of techs?

 SAT Question 8.

Mrs. Beasley is starting a butterfly garden this year. The initial area is 720 square feet and her growth plan is 84 square feet to be added per year. If a function is written in the form f(x) = ax + b, where f(x) represents the number of square feet and x represents the number of months that have passed, what is the value of x, when f(x) = 1,126?

Possible answers for SAT question #8.

A beautiful butterfly garden.

Answers to last week’s questions:

5. 108 square inches

6. B

SAT Question 5.                 Trigonometry

In triangle MNP, angle M and angle N are congruent. Side MN is 24 inches long. If tan ∠M is 0.75, what is the area of the triangle in square inches?

If ∠ M ≅ ∠ N, then MP ≅ NP. I have marked these as x.

Triangle MNP. Angles M and N are congruent. Side MN is 24 units.Draw a line from P to MN. I have marked this as h, the height of the triangle. Because this is an isosceles triangle, this height will bisect segment MN.

tan M = h/12

¾ = h/12

h = 9

Formula needed: Area of a triangle: A = ½(b)(h)

A = ½ (24)(9) = 108 square inches

SAT Question 6.                  Algebra II

A cleaning person is smiling and doing a "thumbs up" with a yellow-gloved-hand.

A housekeeping company cleans x properties per month for m months. For each home, housekeeping starts at d dollars. If the company charges an additional f dollars per square feet and the average home is y square feet, which of these represents the monthly revenue of the housekeeping company?

Possible answers for SAT question #6.

For each house, the company earns yf + d. Multiply yf + d with the number of houses, x(yf + d).

The question is not asking for the revenue of a number of months, so do not include the m.
