Week 1 of the 5-Week Brain Workout Series
Welcome to Week 1 of our 5-week brain workout series! Logic riddles like this week’s challenge are incredible tools for sharpening a student’s mind. They move beyond simple rote memorization and force the brain to practice conditional reasoning and sequential deduction. By learning to evaluate what information is available β and what missing information implies β students build critical thinking pathways that directly translate to better math scores, stronger coding abilities, and superior test-taking strategies. Best of all, it trains them to think several steps ahead, a vital skill for both the classroom and real life. Let’s dive into our first challenge! The Week 1 Puzzle: The Three Hats Dilemma

Think about why the person at the back of the line (Prisoner C), who can see everyone, didn’t speak up immediately. What does his silence tell the other two prisoners?
π The Winner: Prisoner B
His Hat Color: WHITE
Here is how the correct logic breaks down step-by-step:
What Prisoner C Thinks (And Why He Remains Silent)
Prisoner C can see both hats in front of him. If Prisoner A and Prisoner B were both wearing black hats, Prisoner C would have instantly known his own hat was white (since there are only two black hats in total).
Because Prisoner C stays completely silent, everyone learns a vital clue: Prisoner A and Prisoner B cannot both be wearing black hats. At least one of them must be wearing a white hat.
What Prisoner B Deduces
Prisoner B listens to Prisoner C’s silence and realizes: “Prisoner C didn’t speak, which means either I am wearing a white hat, or Prisoner A is wearing a white hat (or we both are).”
The Final Leap
Prisoner B looks at Prisoner A standing in front of him. Prisoner B sees that Prisoner A is wearing a black hat.
Because Prisoner B already knows from Prisoner C’s silence that they cannot both be wearing black, seeing a black hat on Prisoner A means Prisoner B’s own hat must be white.
