But as we prepare to transition into more advanced arithmetic — like long division and pre-algebra — students need to be able to look at numbers through a completely different lens.

The Secret Trick to Cracking the Case
When a student looks at a problem like 9 · ? = 63, there are two highly effective ways they can crack the case depending on where they are in their math journey:
- The Multiplication Route (Skip Counting): They can ask themselves, “How many groups of 9 do I need to count up to to hit 63?” They can use their fingers to skip-count (9, 18, 27, 36, …) until they reach the target product.
- The Division Route (Working Backwards): Advanced detectives will recognize that every multiplication equation has a secret division twin. To find the missing factor, they can simply work backward by dividing the big total by the known factor: 63 ÷ 9 = ?.
