FEED YOUR VOICE TO IMPROVE YOUR VOCAL SOUND!
QUESTION: I often find that eating some foods can alter the sound and intensity of my voice when speaking. I have heard that eating certain fruits can actually help. So, what fruits are best for your voice?
WHAT FRUITS ARE BEST FOR YOUR VOICE?
ANSWER: The old saying goes, “you are, what you eat.” That has never been more true than when we discuss the topic of how to improve your overall vocal sound. The best fruits for vocal health are high-water-content, non-acidic, and hydrating options. Watermelon, apples, pears, and grapes are top choices to keep vocal cords lubricated. These fruits help maintain hydration, reduce mucus, and provide nutrients needed for vocal fold stamina.
Top Fruits for Voice Enhancement:
Watermelon: 92% water content ensures high hydration. This makes it ideal for soothing vocal cords.
Apples: High water content and low acidity help hydrate without causing mucus buildup.
Pineapple: Fresh pineapple is acidic, but it contains bromelain, an enzyme that acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.
Berries & Grapes: Packed with antioxidants and a high water-content, these tasty fruits combat inflammation.
Pears: Another excellent hydrating option known to be gentle on the throat.
Bonus:
Celery: for hydration.
Vocal-Friendly Tips:
Avoid: Extremely acidic fruits (like straight lemon juice) or dried fruits, which can cause phlegm or dehydrate the cords.
Best Time: Consume these fruits throughout the day, rather than immediately before a performance, to allow for digestion.
Temperature: Eat fruit at room temperature. Cold items can constrict the throat muscles.
