Mastering algebraic word problems is one of the most effective ways to boost your SAT Math score. The Digital SAT frequently tests your ability to translate real-world scenarios — like food truck sales or percentage discounts — into system of equations models and percent calculations. By practicing step-by-step variable setups and elimination techniques, you can quickly navigate these high-frequency algebra questions on test day.

In this week’s SAT Saturday practice, we cover a word problem involving a system of linear equations from a local food truck scenario, followed by a fast percentage calculation question.

📝 SAT Practice Question 43: Food Truck Sales (System of Equations)

A local food truck in Yalaha, FL sells tacos for $4 each and burritos for $7 each. On a busy Friday lunch hour, the food truck sold a total of 52 items (only tacos and burritos) and made a total revenue of $271. How many tacos did the food truck sell during this lunch hour?

📝 SAT Practice Question 44: Percent Discount

A store is having a 20% off sale. If a jacket was originally priced at $150, what is the sale price of the jacket, in dollars?

  • A.  30
  • B.  120
  • C.  130
  • D.  150

📋 Week 21 Answer Key & Solutions

Question 41: The Boat Rental Trip (Interpreting Slope and Intercept)

A local boat rental company in the Orlando area charges a base fee of $30 to rent a pontoon, plus an hourly rate of $45. The total cost, C, of a boat rental for h hours can be modeled by C = 45h + 30. If a customer’s total cost was $165, for how many hours did they rent the pontoon?

Answer: 3 hours

  • Step 1: Substitute total cost for C: 165 = 45h + 30
  • Step 2: Subtract base fee from both sides: 135 = 45h
  • Step 3: Divide by 45: h = 135/45 = 3 hours

Question 42: System of Equations Addition

Scenario: If 2x + y = 15 and x – y = 6, what is the value of x?

  • A.  3
  • B.  9
  • C.  7
  • D.  15

Answer: C (x = 7)

  • Explanation: Add the two equations together to eliminate y: (2x + y) + (x – y) = 15 + 6 ⇒ to 3x = 21 ⇒ x = 7.

Consistent weekly practice is the single best strategy for reducing SAT anxiety and raising your score. When you practice breaking word problems down into structured equations every week, identifying the fastest solving path becomes second nature. Focus on recognizing whether elimination or substitution saves more time, and always double-check your arithmetic when isolating variables.
