Legend has it that Albert Einstein wrote a puzzle as a young man and claimed that only 2% of the world's population could solve it. While historians debate if Einstein actually wrote it, one thing is certain: “Einstein’s Puzzle” is one of the most brilliant, satisfying, and legendary logic puzzles ever created. The good news? You don't have to be a literal genius to solve it. Like any workout, you just need to train your brain to get there! THREE FRIENDS (Level 1 – Easy)
This is a great starting point for middle schoolers or anyone new to using a logic grid matrix. The Story: Three friends — Chloe, Devon, and Marcus — each brought a different healthy snack to school (Apple, Carrots, and Pretzels) and each have a different favorite school subject (Math, History, and Science). The Clues:
- The student who brought Carrots hates history but loves Science.
- Chloe loves Math, but she didn’t bring the Apple.
- Marcus brought the Pretzels.
The Answers:

HIGH SCHOOL BAND (Level 2 – Medium) Ready to level up? We are adding a fourth category and a fourth person. Track your clues carefully! The Story: Four musicians — Grace, Henry, Isabel, and Jack — are preparing for a concert. Each plays a different instrument (Flute, Piano, Violin, and Guitar), practices in a different room (Room 1, 2, 3, and 4), and drinks a different beverage to stay hydrated (Tea, Water, Juice, and Coffee). The Clues:

“Einstein’s Puzzle” (Level 3 – Hard)
The Grand Master You’ve made it to the main event. Five houses, five colors, five nationalities, five beverages, five pets, and five favorite hobbies. Set up a massive grid or a master table and take your time!
The Story:
There are 5 houses in a row, each painted a different color. In each house lives a person of a different nationality. These 5 owners drink a certain beverage, have a certain pet, and enjoy a specific hobby. No two owners have the same pet, hobby, or drink.
The Ultimate Question: Who owns the Fish? 🐠
The Clues:
- The Brit lives in the Red house.
- The Swede keeps Dogs as pets.
- The Dane drinks Tea.
- The Green house is exactly to the left of the White house.
- The owner of the Green house drinks Coffee.
- The person who plays Chess rears Birds.
- The owner of the Yellow house plays Video Games.
- The man living in the center house drinks Milk.
- The Norwegian lives in the first house.
- The man who loves Gardening lives next to the one who keeps Cats.
- The man who keeps Horses lives next to the man who plays Video Games.
- The person who loves Photography drinks Juice.
- The German loves Painting.
- The Norwegian lives next to the Blue house.
- The man who loves Gardening has a neighbor who drinks Water.
NEED A HINT FOR THE MASTER PUZZLE? Don't let the size of the puzzle scare you! The absolute best way to solve Einstein's puzzle is to draw a row of 5 blank houses (or boxes numbered 1 to 5) on a piece of paper.
- Hint 1: Look at Clue 9. Place the “Norwegian” in House 1.
- Hint 2: Look at Clue 14. If the Norwegian is in House 1, House 2 must be the Blue house!
- Hint 3: Look at Clue 8. Place “Milk” right into House 3.
From here, look for clues that mention house colors and positions (like Clues 1, 4, and 5) to start filling in the physical neighborhood!

For people who do successfully solve it by hand using pen and paper, the average time generally falls between 30 minutes to 2 hours. The famous claim that “98% of the world cannot solve it” is widely considered a myth to make the riddle sound more legendary. In reality, puzzle enthusiasts and math historians agree that nearly anyone with basic deductive reasoning skills can solve it if they have the patience to sit down for an hour or two with a pen and paper. Because there are so many pieces of data to track—spanning 5 dimensions across 25 total variables—the time it takes really comes down to the solver’s method:

The 30-Minute Speed Runners: People who finish closer to 30 minutes almost always use a fully structured, blank logic matrix grid from the start, or set up automated formulas in an Excel spreadsheet to immediately catch overlapping "X" patterns for them.

The 1 to 2 Hour Mark: This is the sweet spot for people who sit down with scratch paper and think through the clues deductively. It takes a significant amount of time just to organize the layout, avoid hitting a logical dead-end, and cross-reference the indirect clues (like the ones involving neighbors).

The 3+ Hour Marathoners: Plenty of brilliant people take 3 or more hours — or even have to step away and restart completely from scratch — because it is incredibly easy to accidentally mix up a directional clue (like placing a house to the right instead of the left) and cause the whole puzzle to collapse.
The "98%" who can't solve it are simply the people who give up after 15 minutes because they get a headache trying to hold all the clues in their head at once!
