SAT Prep is an important topic, but you do not need to approach it with fear. Each Saturday, two questions will be posted similar to the type you will find on the mathematics sections of an SAT test.* The following week, I will provide the answer along with two new questions. These questions are good practice for the PSAT or the ACT as well.
* I am creating these myself, based on available SAT test materials (so that I do not infringe on copyright laws).

SAT QUESTION #10 GEOMETRY

Due to weather, a ship’s captain decides that it is safer to complete the trip from one port to another in two legs. He will pilot the ship due north for 600 knots before turning to go due east. If the direct route is 1800 knots, How many miles due east will the captain need to go? (Round your answer to the nearest tenth).
_________ knots
SOLUTIONS FOR # 7 AND 8
- D. 1020x + 1300y ≤ 10,000
x + y ≥ 7
- C. 58
SAT Question 7 Solution
ALGEBRA 1 – SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

The new clinic on Main Street needs to hire office staff. They are going to hire at least 7 people and have a total budget of $10,000 per week. The window clerks will earn $1,020 per week, and the nurse techs will earn $1,300 per week. Which of these inequalities represents this situation, where x is the number of clerks and y is the number of techs?

Each clerk earns $1020: 1020x and each tech earns $1300: 1300y. The total needs to be less than or equal to the budgeted $10,000. Our first sentence needs to be 1020x + 1300y ≤ 10,000. Choices A and B are eliminated.
The clinic wants to hire at least 7 people – 7 or more. Our second sentence needs to be x + y ≥ 7. Choice C is eliminated.
SAT Question 8 Solution ALGEBRA 2 – FUNCTIONS

Mrs. Beasley is starting a butterfly garden this year. The initial area is 720 square feet and her growth plan is 84 square feet to be added per year. If a function is written in the form f(x) = ax + b, where f(x) represents the number of square feet and x represents the number of months that have passed, what is the value of x, when f(x) = 1,126?

Note that the growth plan says Mrs. Beasley is adding 84 square feet per year, but the function says x represents the number of months that have passed. When you write the function, a = 84/12 = 7; b is the initial amount, 720 square feet.
f(x) = 7x + 720
1,126 = 7x + 720
406 = 7x
x = 58 months

Remember, the answers for this week’s questions will be posted next Saturday along with an explanation of how we get to those answers.
